Boom
The chorus of thundering
cannons announcing the day,
the grass on the hills
and woods set in sway,
Autumn like armies
in red, orange and blue,
charges directly
and bursts into view—
Colours and crispness,
the air and the mist,
along an old river
that meanders and twists,
so suited and ready,
speechless we stand,
letting autumn’s bright leafage
flow through our hands.
So upward we climb
to the Seiser Alm,
where windows of wonder
unfold in the calm,
the larches stand ready,
the cameras are aimed,
but limestone giants
will not be contained—
The road back to Meran,
now silent in sun,
winds through the woods
where the colours still run,
a few hours to spend
till the guns start to sound,
announcing the day’s end
as armies lie down.
